Truth Will Out: Frequently Asked Questions

Alan Ayckbourn's Archivist Simon Murgatroyd answers some of the most frequently asked questions about Alan Ayckbourn's Truth Will Out. If you have a question about this or any other of Alan Ayckbourn's plays, you can contact the website via the Contact Us page.

Will Truth Will Out ever be produced?
Truth Will Out had its first - possibly only - public airing in a rehearsed reading on 17 September 2023 at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. It is unknown whether the success of this will lead to a future full production.

Is Truth Will Out Alan Ayckbourn' 84th play?
No. Truth Will Out was intended to be his 84th play but when the world premiere production was cancelled, Anno Domino became his 84th play. This is because Alan Ayckbourn only considers play which have had staged, professional productions to be part of his official play canon. Truth Will Out has not been professionally staged - and is unlikely to be - so it is not part of the official canon and instead considered one of the 'grey plays'; plays which have been produced in some form other than a full professional staging (in this case, a rehearsed reading), but which have not been published and are not available for production.

Will Truth Will Out be released for future performance.
At this time, it is unknown whether Truth Will Out will ever receive a full production. Certainly, it will not be released for performance until Alan Ayckbourn has directed a full production as is common with all his works.

Will Truth Will Out be published?
Currently, no. Until the play is professionally produced as a full-cast production, Truth Will Out will not be published.

Can I read Truth Will Out?
Truth Will Out is held in the Ayckbourn Archive in the Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York. It is available to read in situ for visitors to the Borthwick Institute.
